Just when we thought that summer is over, the sun is back with a vengeance! So I am here to discuss the importance of the daiky use of sunscreen!
Exposure to UV light is a well documented factor in pigmentation disorders like melasma and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. Light from across the electromagnetic spectrum can cause unwanted effects including discoloration, skin cancers and photoaging. Protecting your skin from these harmful rays are essential to thwarting the development of these unsightly skin conditions.
Recent studies show that visble light is a significant and under recognized contributor, specially in skin of color.
Recently, it was found that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides is recommended. Tinted sunscreens differ from non tinted in their content of iron oxide and pigmentary titanium dioxide, which physically block visible light and provide color to the sunscreen. Iron oxides protect against both visible light and UV light.
In the search for an ideal sunscreen, different people look for different characteristics: broad spectrum with adequate coverage for both vl and uvl, tint, formulation, texture, active ingredients, and cost.
Nowadays, multitasking sunscreens have come out, making it easier for busy women. Additives such as the antioxidants vit E and C diminish UV induced oxidative stress on the skin. Depigmenting agents are also now added to help jn the treatment of melasma.
Of course, for you to reap the benefits of these sunscreens. You should apply 2mg/cm2 (thats about half a teaspoon) for effective protection. Use under makeup and reapply every 2-3 hrs if under the sun and after sweating or swimming.
